ISO 9606-1

An overview of the ISO standard for qualifying welders performing fusion welding of steel.

ISO 9606-1 sets out how welders are qualified for fusion welding of steels, on an international basis. This overview summarizes its purpose and structure; it does not replace the official standard.

Overview

ISO 9606-1 is the first part of the ISO 9606 series and addresses qualification testing of welders for fusion welding, specifically for steel materials, independent of any particular fabrication code.

Scope

It applies to individual welders rather than to welding procedures, and covers the test pieces, essential variables and examination methods used to determine the range a welder is qualified to work within.

Welder Qualification Framework

Qualification is based on a test weld made under defined conditions, examined visually and, where required, by additional methods, against stated acceptance criteria — establishing a documented basis for the welder's qualification.

Essential Test Variables

Variables such as welding process, product type, material group, dimensions, welding position and filler material define the qualification's range of validity — changes outside that range require re-qualification.

Qualification Range

A single qualification test can cover a defined range of thicknesses, diameters and positions rather than one exact combination, following rules set out in the standard for extending test results to related conditions.

Relationship to Other Standards

ISO 9606-1 addresses welder qualification specifically, in contrast to ASME Section IX, which qualifies both procedures and welders together, and to AWS D1.1, which applies its own structural-welding-specific qualification approach. International projects sometimes need to reconcile more than one of these frameworks.
